Mordor was a black, volcanic plain in the southeast of Middle-earth, east of Gondor, Ithilien, and the great river Anduin. Mordor was chosen by Sauron as his realm because of the mountain ranges surrounding it on three sides, creating a natural fortress against his enemies and preventing them from easily invading it.

Gondor was the most prominent kingdom of Men in Middle-earth, bordered by Rohan to the north, Harad to the south, the Cape of Andrast and the Sea to the west, and Mordor to the east. Its first capital was Osgiliath, moved to Minas Anor in TA 1640. This city, later renamed Minas Tirith, remained the capital of Gondor for the rest of the Third Age and into the Fourth Age; other major fortresses included Pelargir, Dol Amroth in Belfalas and Minas Ithil.

The Shire was a country in northwestern Middle-earth, inhabited by the hobbits. It was located in the region of Eriador, and was under the control of the Reunited Kingdom as a Free Land.

Barad-dûr ("Dark Fortress") was Sauron's central stronghold in Mordor, serving as his seat of power in Middle-earth in the Second Age and late Third Age.

Orthanc was the black, impenetrable tower of Isengard built by the Dúnedain. By the Great Years and the War of the Ring, it was the seat of power of the Wizard Saruman. It stood in the center of the Ring of Isengard, a daunting defensive wall built by the early Men of Gondor.

Helm's Deep, named for Helm Hammerhand, was a fortified gorge in the White Mountains located below the Thrihyrne. It lay near the Westfold and was the location of the Hornburg.[1] It was later made famous by the Battle of the Hornburg, a major battle of the War of the Ring.

Rohan, also called the Kingdom of Rohan[1] and the Riddermark (Rohanese), was a great kingdom of Men located in the land once known as Calenardhon, situated in the plains between the Misty Mountains and the White Mountains. The kingdom of Rohan extended from the banks of the River Isen in the west, up to the East Wall of Rohan and shores of the River Anduin in the east. The forest of Fangorn lay on its border, and the Elven forest of Lothlórien lay north of the River Limlight.
